A recent surge of over 20,000 minor earthquakes near Santorini led to a state of emergency in the region. However, as activity subsided, residents and seasonal workers began returning to the island in preparation for the tourist season starting in April. Wine writer Eleni Kefalopoulou described the island as calm amidst media panic. Seismology professor Costas Papazahos reassured that strong quakes have not been observed recently, highlighting upgraded monitoring systems and ongoing research efforts. Overall, the situation in Santorini appears to be stabilizing and safe for visitors.
There was all this panic, particularly in the Greek media, about Santorini, yet people were skiing beside Mount Etna recently, as it was erupting.
We haven't seen strong ones in several days though inhabitants have felt some, such as one yesterday registering 3.7 and 3.2R ... However, the [quake] sequence has concluded at this stage.
But that doesn't mean there is concern. We're simply making the most of the opportunity to carry out studies that wouldn't be possible during periods without seismic activity.
