At least two people were killed and another 26 injured Monday in an explosion at a fuel depot on the outskirts of Florence, according to city officials and the company that ran the facility. The death toll could rise, as three workers at the depot in the town of Calenzano remained unaccounted for.
Italy's minister for civil protection, Nello Musumeci, emphasized that rescue workers were immediately deployed after the explosion and that local hospitals were put on high alert to ensure readiness for emergencies.
Mayor of Florence, Sara Funaro, described the situation as very, very bad, stating the city would offer psychological assistance to the families of the victims, stressing the importance of supporting those directly affected.
Luca Tescaroli, the chief prosecutor of Prato, announced that his office would open a case to investigate the causes of the explosion and identify any potential accountability.
