EU confirms 'countermeasures' to Trump's tariffs as 26bn of US goods to face duties
Briefly

The EU is responding to US tariffs on steel and aluminium by imposing its own retaliatory measures worth €26 billion. This includes not only steel and aluminium but also textiles, home appliances, and agricultural goods, putting pressure on already strained transatlantic relations. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the importance of negotiation to avoid economic burdens and warned of rising prices and job losses in both regions due to these tariffs, which disrupt supply chains and create economic uncertainty.
As the US are applying tariffs worth 28 billion dollars, we are responding with countermeasures worth 26 billion euros," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement.
We will always remain open to negotiation. We firmly believe that in a world fraught with geopolitical and economic uncertainties, it is not in our common interest to burden our economies with tariffs," von der Leyen said.
Tariffs are taxes. They are bad for business, and even worse for consumers. These tariffs are disrupting supply chains. They bring uncertainty for the economy," she said.
