On Monday, Spain and Portugal faced significant nationwide power outages, disrupting essential services. Both countries reported widespread infrastructural failures, with traffic control challenges arising in Portugal. The Spanish National Institute for Cybersecurity is investigating the possibility of cybercriminal involvement, though no confirmations are made. Deputy Minister Manuel Castro Almeida noted the situation affects not only the Iberian Peninsula but could extend to neighboring countries like Germany and Morocco if a cyberattack is verified. This incident could represent one of the largest cyber events impacting critical infrastructure since previous notable attacks.
If these power outages are proven to be the result of a cyberattack, it will be the most significant attack of its kind since the BlackEnergy attacks on Ukraine in 2015 and far more wide reaching.
According to Spanish newspaper: 'the power outages have paralyzed the normal operation of infrastructure, communications, roads - with widespread traffic light failures - train stations, airports, businesses, and buildings, including incidents involving elevators.'
