Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, many Orthodox priests have faced severe repression from both secular and religious authorities. This led to a mass exodus, particularly to countries like Germany, where these priests struggle with unique challenges, such as language barriers and the difficulty of transferring their skills. Father Yakov, one such priest, shared his journey of fleeing Russia, fearing persecution, and adjusting to a new life, highlighting the emotional and practical difficulties faced by clergy in exile.
I had no more prospects of staying in Russia ... under the current political regime and the situation in the Russian Orthodox Church.
Even if that was true at the time, I was worried that tomorrow everything could change.
The fleeing clergy face unique issues as they often don't have transferable skills.
