The Climate Fix: Nuclear Waste Finds Its Forever Home
Briefly

The U.S. has struggled for decades with the issue of used nuclear fuel disposal, lacking a permanent solution. In contrast, Finland is on the verge of commencing operations at the world’s first permanent underground disposal site for spent nuclear fuel. This facility, managed by Posiva Oy—a collaboration of Finnish nuclear companies—has been under development since 2004. Posiva’s communications manager emphasizes that achieving final disposal represents a crucial step toward sustainable nuclear energy, addressing a significant gap in the lifecycle management of nuclear waste.
Posiva has been working on the site, located on the country's western coast, since 2004, and it hopes to begin permanent disposal in less than a year.
We have a solution, said Pasi Tuohimaa, Posiva's communications manager. Final disposal of the spent fuel, it has been the missing part of sustainable use of nuclear energy.
