"The most sustainable building is the one that already exists."
"This statement, made by the director of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), Carl Elefante, brings an inconvenient truth."
"In this context, the Carcara House is a pilot project that aims to reduce the extraction of raw materials, transportation distances, and the amount of waste generated by the construction industry, expanding the concept of sustainability."
Carcara House is a pilot project designed to reduce raw material extraction, shorten transportation distances, and minimize construction industry waste by prioritizing reuse. The project assembles a team including Victoria Nizarala, Lara Guimaraes, Marianela Bastos, Bruna Rios, and coordination by Dander Freitas. Reusable materials are sourced through Arquivo Reuso to lower embodied energy and material demand. The initiative frames sustainability around retaining existing buildings and materials, targeting circularity in construction supply chains. Practical measures focus on salvaged components, reduced new procurement, and local sourcing to cut transport emissions. The project aims to broaden sustainable building practices beyond typical energy efficiency measures.
