School phone bans DON'T work, scientists say

A University of Birmingham study of 1,227 students from 30 English schools found that banning smartphones in schools does not lead to improved grades or well-being. Even though phone bans reduced smartphone and social media use by about 40 minutes and 30 minutes per day, respectively, students compensated by using their phones more at home. Researchers concluded that school phone bans are ineffective as a stand-alone solution and emphasized the need to address overall smartphone use for enhancing adolescent health and well-being.
Our study suggests that school policies are not the silver bullet for preventing the detrimental impacts of smartphone and social media use.
Restrictive policies on recreational phone use in schools do not lead to better outcomes among students, but that addressing overall phone use should be a priority.
