Opinion: The Nation's Report Card is out. Students with disabilities deserve better
Briefly

The recent Nation's Report Card revealed a troubling disparity in educational achievements between students with disabilities and their non-disabled counterparts. Data showed that these students, comprising 15% of the public school population, scored significantly lower in both math and reading assessments, underscoring a widening achievement gap. With an increase in special education enrollment, exceeding 7 million, the education system's failure to adapt threatens the rights of these children to quality education. Solutions include hiring more special education teachers and enhancing support for general education instructors to foster more inclusive classrooms.
This achievement gap reflects an ongoing crisis likely to worsen with inaction.
Improving outcomes for students with disabilities will require increasing the number of special education teachers to meet rising demand, a well-documented challenge.
If we want to see change, all teachers need the support necessary to make that happen.
Two-thirds of special education students spend more than 80% of their school day in a general education classroom.
