A group of teachers at Belleville High School, NJ, wore t-shirts referencing President Trump's order to rename the Gulf of Mexico, leading to outrage. The shirts were interpreted by many as bullying toward the majority Hispanic student body, fearing ICE raids. Teachers expressed concerns for their students, emphasizing the importance of providing a supportive and safe school environment. The superintendent acknowledged the incident and mentioned that it would be addressed, but details on how were not disclosed, causing further community unrest about the situation.
Our student body has been suffering, crying, coming into school, emails from kids saying their parents are not letting come back for fear that they get picked up by ICE raids.
Our job is to support these kids and reassure them the school is safe place and to come here.
I feel as if those t-shirts at Belleville High School are sending a clear-cut message to these kids in order to intimidate them and to bully them.
We understand this has impacted members of our community in different ways, and we take these concerns seriously.
