California legislators are advancing new bills aimed at providing stronger protections for immigrant students. AB 49 would block ICE from entering schools without clear authorization. SB 48 would prohibit police collaboration with ICE within a mile of schools, while SB 98 mandates schools notify relevant parties of ICE presence on campus. These proposals follow the California Values Act, which limits voluntary cooperation between public institutions and immigration enforcement, aiming to foster trust in local authorities among the state's large immigrant community.
Regardless of how you feel about efforts to establish a safe and secure border, or in pursuing undocumented immigrants who have committed crimes, that's not what we're talking about here. We're talking about kids.
The new proposed measures would build on existing safeguards for California's large immigrant population.
Under the 2017 California Values Act (SB 54), passed at the start of Trump's first term, schools and universities, as well as police, courts, county hospitals and other public institutions, are discouraged from voluntarily working with immigration agents.
California became the first in the nation to enact a statewide 'sanctuary law,' aimed at promoting trust and cooperation between local authorities and the communities they serve, regardless of immigration status.
