This is a small story with big themes about a gay teen navigating respect and solidarity within an elite Black high school.
As an African American gay man, I am so grateful to Tarell Alvin McCraney and the bravery he gives Pharus, his protagonist.
I knew I was gay as early as middle school; acceptance was harder to find back then, especially within my religious upbringing.
Even though Pharus is bullied, he refuses to back down, reflecting a resilience I wish I had during my youth.
