In response to President Trump's renewed focus on immigration enforcement, California legislators have introduced several measures aimed at safeguarding migrant families. One key initiative is the Sending Alerts to Families in Education (SAFE) Act by Senate Education Chair Sasha Renee Perez, which mandates schools to immediately notify students and parents if immigration officers are present on campus. This legislation arises after the Trump administration's policy change, which dismantled protections that previously kept schools and other sensitive locations free from immigration enforcement actions, prompting fears among vulnerable communities.
Students and parents are rightfully scared... It's clear President Trump will not respect the sanctity of our schools. California must take bold action to inform and empower students.
SB 98... would require schools to immediately notify all pupils, parents, faculty, and staff of the presence of immigration officers on the schoolsite.
The Trump administration announced it had reversed a previous federal policy restricting immigration officers from entering sensitive places, including schools, to arrest undocumented migrants.
Schools already have systems in place to send rapid alerts via texts or emails... Under this bill, schools would use that same system to notify the community.
