ASU Republicans urge reporting undocumented peers, protested
Briefly

College Republicans United hosted a controversial tabling event at Arizona State University to urge students to report undocumented individuals to ICE, igniting backlash from over 700 protesters. This event, promoted as a free speech initiative by the group, attracted criticism from university leaders who highlighted the conflict between the group’s actions and academic community principles while affirming their right to free speech. The event ultimately faced overwhelming protest from students advocating for immigrant rights, leading to the departure of College Republicans United after just an hour on campus.
"We will be tabling on campus asking fellow students to report their criminal classmates to ICE for deportation," the group posted on X.
"Encouraging ASU students to make indiscriminate complaints to law enforcement about fellow students is not in keeping with the principles which underlie our academic community," the statement read.
Hundreds of protesters marched around the group's lone table, chanting slogans in support of immigrants, and the group left after an hour, AZ Central reported.
But we must also recognize that we live in a country that protects individual free speech, even speech that is hurtful."
