No shortcuts' at new Thai restaurant Bangkok by the Bay
Briefly

Bangkok by the Bay opened in West Berkeley after the closure of Riva Cucina, quickly catching the attention of local food enthusiasts. Owners Sung Makawatsakul and Nantika Julakasilp, both Thai natives with deep roots in the Bay Area, spent decades dreaming of starting their own restaurant since meeting while working at an Oakland eatery over 20 years ago. The restaurant, featuring authentic Thai street food, is a testament to their shared passion for hospitality, finally realized after years of discussion and professional development.
Working there, I just felt like it's so much fun meeting people and working with friends, Julakasilp said.
We both had the passion and the experience, Makawatsakul said. And we kept talking about it.
The project has been decades in the making for owners Sung Makawatsakul and Nantika Julakasilp, who had been dreaming of this restaurant since their time together.
A late entry to last year's spate of Thai restaurant openings, Bangkok by the Bay debuted in late October 2024.
