Firebrand Artisan Breads, a longtime Oakland staple, will close its Uptown location on Dec. 20 due to ongoing financial headwinds and insufficient city support.
According to CEO Matt Kreutz, the closure stems from strategic and financial reasoning, prioritizing the upcoming financial reorganization and the state of the lease.
Employees, including Alex Bermillo, expressed grievances about the abrupt closure announcement, learning first from security rather than official channels from management.
Kreutz acknowledged staff concerns, stating that he relayed information as soon as he confirmed the closing date after receiving notice from the landlord.
