In a fatal incident last week in Concord, 41-year-old Lucas Ray Smith was shot dead while attempting to rob the S&S Fast & Easy Mart. Armed with a shotgun, Smith demanded access to the store's safe and forced an employee to the back of the premises. In the midst of a struggle for disarmament between Smith and the first employee, a second employee brandished a legally owned handgun and fatally shot Smith. The police are continuing to investigate the incident, which will be reviewed by the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office.
