Donald Horecka, a 25-year-old from Las Vegas, was identified after being linked to remains found in 1980, thanks to advances in DNA technology.
The case was reopened in 2023 as part of the Doe Cold Case Project, aimed at identifying previously unidentified remains through modern forensic methods.
The investigation determined Horecka died of Corrosive Esophagitis after ingesting an unconsumable chemical, and faced challenges in identifying his remains for decades.
Sheriff-Coroner Thomas A. Ferrara expressed hope that updated identification techniques would not only restore names to victims but also offer families closure.
