In East San Jose, a significant protest unfolded against Trump's mass deportation threats, drawing hundreds of community members, including students from Overfelt High School. The rally featured lowrider trucks, banners, and chants like 'Si se puede.' It was sparked by recent ICE activity reported in the area. Attendees expressed fears over the impact of Trump's policies on immigrants. Participants, young and old, aimed to convey their message that immigrants deserve support and respect, emphasizing that every individual has a place in America, underscored by quotes from local residents and students.
We just need to let [Trump] know he's wrong, said Teresa Alcaraz, a resident of San Jose. We're getting our voices across because that's what we do.
It's scary to hear what Trump has been saying about immigrants. We all feel that we all have a reason to be here, even if we're here illegally, said 15-year-old student Angel Lopez.
Protestors marched through traffic and brought the intersection to a standstill, waving flags and with posters reading No human is illegal on stolen land and Stop deportation.
The protest came two days after the first reported activity of Immigration and Customs Enforcement in San Jose since the inauguration of Trump, who came into office threatening mass deportations.
