Filmmaker Sareeta Young leads BlkReels, an Oakland-based production company deeply embedded in the local culture. Young's mission is to break down barriers in the film industry, offering tailored production services to musicians, nonprofits, and small businesses. Her journey began in high school as a hobbyist photographer, transitioning from retail management to pursuing her passion for documentary filmmaking at UCLA. BlkReels is known for its customer-centric approach and commitment to providing worry-free production experiences, contrasting sharply with traditional companies that often overlook smaller clients and their unique needs.
"We bring people's ideas out of their heads and onto the big screen," Young said during an interview at Kinfolx, a hip Downtown Oakland coffee shop, wine bar and community space.
"What makes us different is our dedication to customer service and professionalism. We strive to make sure each client has a worry-free and empowering experience."
Gatekeeping - controlling who gets access to power and who doesn't - manifests in numerous ways in the film world. Artists and small businesses seeking video production services aren't well served by most production companies.
Photography started as a hobby for Young when she joined her yearbook program at Albany High School as an elective. She instantly took a liking to the work, but was told camera work was a hobby, not a career.
