Dangerous underpass in Oakland's Chinatown gets $2 million planning grant
Briefly

The Oakland Chinatown I-880 Underpass Activation Project has received a $2 million federal grant aimed at improving safety for pedestrians and cyclists traveling from Chinatown to the waterfront. The planning phase, led by East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation and various transportation agencies, will focus on creating a comprehensive connectivity plan that enhances underpass access. This initiative is expected to coexist with the Alameda Access Project, further aiming to create safer and more accessible routes for the local community.
"This grant is a huge opportunity for the residents and businesses of Chinatown. It’s great news all around," said Vicki Shu of the East Bay Community Foundation.
"The connectivity plan will find physical and social ways to connect Chinatown to the waterfront, focusing on the underpasses on Webster, Jackson, Madison, and Oak Streets," says Annie Ledbury.
