The Personal Information Protection Commission stated that Meta collected sensitive data from about 980,000 South Korean users without consent, violating privacy laws.
Specifically, the agency highlighted that user behaviour data was analyzed to create targeted advertising themes, with sensitive information categorized, including users' religions and sexual identities.
There were also allegations that Meta unfairly declined user requests for personal data access and failed to prevent the leakage of data concerning 10 South Korean individuals.
Meta Platforms has been ordered to pay a significant fine by South Korea's data protection agency for improperly collecting and utilizing user data for advertising.
