Meta has been fined approximately $15.7 million by South Korea's data protection agency for collecting sensitive data from around 980,000 users without consent.
The Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) cited the unauthorized sharing of sensitive data with approximately 4,000 advertisers as a clear violation of local data protection regulations.
Meta's data collection methods included analyzing users' liked pages and the ads they clicked, revealing deeply personal information and violating privacy norms.
The PIPC's investigation revealed that sensitive user data was mishandled not only through unauthorized sharing but also included a lack of proper response to user data access requests.
