Apple has been fined 150 million euros ($162.4 million) by French antitrust regulators for misusing its dominant position in mobile app advertising through its App Tracking Transparency (ATT) tool. This is the first fine related to the ATT tool, following a previous significant fine from the European Union. The head of the French Competition Authority stated that this decision was made independently of potential U.S. reactions, emphasizing the application of competition law. Apple expressed disappointment but highlighted that no specific changes to ATT were required by the authority.
The ATT tool lets iPhone and iPad users decide which apps can track their activity.
We apply competition law in an apolitical manner,” said Benoit Coeuré regarding the antitrust decision.
The fine is the first by any regulator on Apple's App Tracking Transparency tool, aiming to address competition concerns.
Apple expressed disappointment but noted that the French Competition Authority did not mandate specific changes to its ATT.
