Apple has ceased offering its Advanced Data Protection feature to users in the UK, hindering their ability to utilize enhanced iCloud data encryption. This decision stems from a conflict with the UK government, which has mandated that Apple create a backdoor for security officials to access encrypted data. In a statement, Apple expressed disappointment over this limitation, stressing the importance of data privacy amidst increasing data breaches, while defending the security advantages that end-to-end encryption brings to users.
We are gravely disappointed that the protections provided by ADP will not be available to our customers in the UK given the continuing rise of data breaches and other threats to customer privacy.
ADP protects iCloud data with end-to-end encryption, which means the data can only be decrypted by the user who owns it, and only on their trusted devices.
