Briefly

In July 2023, during my visit to Panama, I learned from our guide that the canal's water levels were critically low due to sparse rains during the rainy season.
While President Trump expressed concerns about Chinese influence in Panama, the real threat to U.S. commerce through the canal stems from climate change impacting water availability.
The Panama Canal needs around 50 million gallons of freshwater to send a single ship through its locks, highlighting the severe impact of climate change on operations.
The ongoing changes in climate have already forced the Panama Canal Authority to restrict daily ship passages significantly, sometimes by as much as 40 percent.
