Joseph Lynskey, on December 31, found himself in a life-threatening situation at the 18th Street subway station in Manhattan. After an unexpected fall, he was in midair and faced the imminent danger of an oncoming train. Expecting to die, he instead became aware of his survival as he crashed onto the tracks and remained under the train. His reflections on the traumatic incident reveal the fragility of life and the instinctive human response when confronted with death.
My life did not flash before my eyes, he said. My thought was I've been pushed, and I'm going to get hit by the train.
I looked up, and I was underneath the 1 train, he said. Blood pooled beneath his skull. The wetness, and the searing pain, let him know he was alive.
