New Year's Eve has always struck me as the most treacherous of nights. Not because of the drink, or the fireworks, or the pressure of staying awake past midnight (although that alone should qualify as an endurance sport). Like Valentine's Day and your birthday, what makes New Year's Eve perilous is the collective insistence that this night has to deliver: the best meal, the best party, the best version of ourselves.
As the crowd cheered among the explosive crackle of fireworks, upbeat dance music, and cries of " Feliz Ano Novo," a surge of gratitude coursed through my body. It was New Year's Eve 2024, and I was hugging and cheering with new friends I had met just hours before. Earlier that year, I'd spent two months gallivanting around London, Berlin, Amsterdam, Rome, Florence, and Prague solo. Although I loved returning home to San Francisco, it didn't take long for my wanderlust to set in again.
Close out 2025 with active compassion at Kadampa Meditation Center San Francisco before ringing in 2026. Our Resident Teacher Gen Kelsang Choma will give a talk on cultivating peace in our world by developing our own inner peace, and the power of making dedications for our loved ones and world. We will then chant short Prayers for World Peace before gathering in our community space for light bites and a non-alcoholic New Year's Eve toast.

Hosting New Year's Eve is truly an exercise in multitasking. You need to generate excitement at the start, keep food and drinks flowing, and build anticipation toward the midnight countdown. My strategy is to plan a menu that is deceptively simple, allowing the host to actually enjoy the party. I look to one of my favorite large-format meals: the Korean Bo Ssam, popularized by Momofuku Ssam Bar.
This show is organized by David "Papi" Fimbres (of local bands Orquestra Pacífico Tropical, Boink, Friskies, et al.), who will headline as part of his duo Dreckig with his wife Shana "Azúcar" Lindbeck, who make a trippy, groovy blend of Latin dance music informed by cumbia, electronic, and krautrock-infused music with lyrics sung in Spanish, German, and English. Notably, this huge New Year's Eve bash will also see a live performance from Portland-based neo-soul R&B mainstay Blossom,

"Sometimes the calendar gets in the way of the celebration, which is why my NBC family and I decided this winter was time for us all to focus on the Olympics. "But don't worry, we'll party together bigger and better later in 2026. Ya dig,"
