After two years of teaching the kids to play proper soccer, it was evident that our strategy crumbled when faced with the actual game environment. They were dribbling too close to their own goal, passing into congestion, and consistently creating problems rather than solving them. We kept losing games—even when the results didn't matter. It was clear that we needed to rethink our approach to maintain the children's enthusiasm for the sport.
While the initial coaching strategy was about freedom of play, it became necessary to instill some basic tactical awareness in our players. Simply encouraging kids to express themselves without teaching them the consequences of their actions proved insufficient when it came to the unforgiving nature of matches. Losing isn’t supposed to matter at this age, but the risk of diminished enthusiasm loomed over us as we were gifting goals to the opposition.
