Sharon Smith, known as 'Rose' in the clubs, used her Polaroid SX-70 to capture the vibrant nightlife of 1980s NYC, ultimately creating a poignant record of an era before tragedy struck.
In her new book, Camera Girl, Ms. Smith reflects on the wild, drug-fueled, and gender-bending club scene of New York: 'I witnessed fleeting moments of freedom and expressiveness during a transformative time.'
Recalling her early days at the Roxy, Smith shares, 'I had to create my own persona. Donning vintage-inspired dresses, I transformed into the persona of a classic photographer, capturing the spirit of the times.'
