At the end of January, the Doomsday Clock was set at 89 seconds to midnight, the closest it has ever been to global catastrophe due to human-made threats like nuclear weapons and climate change. Alexandra Bell, a nuclear affairs expert, was appointed as the new president of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, replacing Rachel Bronson. She has extensive experience in arms control and nonproliferation and emphasized the importance of learning from history while adapting to current global challenges in her role at the Bulletin.
During the last two years of the Biden administration, she led the U.S. delegation of the P5 Process, currently the only forum where the United States, China and Russia discuss nuclear risk reduction.
It's important to listen to the echoes of history, she said, to be informed by the past, but not shackled to it.
The clock being at its closest point to midnight now is really a warning that reflects the urgent and evolving threats our world faces today.
Ms. Bell worked on arms control and nonproliferation issues in the U.S. State Department starting in the Obama administration, where she was involved in securing ratification of New START.
