After a Treasure Hunt,' a Cut-Up Masterpiece Returns to Venice
Briefly

Over 40 years ago, Italian culture officials in Venice began a treasure hunt for the pieces of the nine-panel ceiling painted by Giorgio Vasari, ultimately reassembling it after its disassembly and scattering across Europe.
The ceiling depicting the Triumph of Virtues, commissioned by Giovanni Corner, had been dismantled in 1798. Its successful recovery after decades reflects both cultural perseverance and dedication.
Gallerie dell'Accademia's director, Giulio Manieri Elia, noted that the recovery was initially uncertain, but the discovery of the panels, including a notable cherub, became a remarkable journey.
Vasari's detailed descriptions in his works not only served as guidance during the recovery process of the ceiling panels but also highlighted the significance of preserving art history.
