Margarita Forés, a celebrated Filipino chef, has died at the age of 65, found unresponsive in her Hong Kong hotel room. The cause of death remains unknown. Forés was renowned for elevating Filipino cuisine and introducing authentic Italian food to the Philippines through her successful restaurant chain, Cibo, which launched in 1997. Her innovative approach earned her accolades, including Asia's Best Female Chef in 2016. A two-time cancer survivor, she expressed a desire to slow down at this stage of her life. Support poured in from fans following her sudden passing.
"It is with a heavy heart that I share the sudden passing of my Mom, Margarita A. Forés," her son Amando Forés wrote in his Instagram post.
Forés used her passion to launch Cibo, a popular Italian chain offering affordable comfort food at more than 20 locations across the Philippines, in 1997.
At 65, I have realized I have worked so hard already... So, what I really want to do is wind down a bit."
The acclaimed chef, whose career in the food industry spans more than three decades, first developed a passion for Italian cooking while living in New York.
