Zaha Hadid Architects has unveiled plans for a cultural center, the Centre of Mediterranean Culture, in Reggio Calabria, Italy. The building boasts a futuristic design with a sculpted aluminum facade that is 90% opaque and locally produced, emphasizing sustainability. Its composition has been shaped by advanced computer modeling to adapt to local environmental conditions, featuring public courtyards that provide shelter from sunlight and northern winds. The center's dynamic interior layout spans 24,000 square meters and draws inspiration from marine life, celebrating the Mediterranean's natural beauty and regional identity.
The building's exterior features a facade that is 90% opaque, crafted from marine-grade anodized aluminum panels that are durable and resilient and produced locally.
Advanced computer simulation modeling has determined the building's composition, which alternates architectural volumes between public courtyards sheltered from the sunlight and the strong winds.
Each sheltered courtyard overlooks the port to the east, the city to the south, or leads to the west-facing terrace with its panoramic views of the Strait and Sicily.
