Following the cancellation of a costly project by Herzog & de Meuron, the Vancouver Art Gallery is launching a new architectural competition focusing on local talent. This project, significantly smaller than the original plan, aims to adhere to a strict budget while doubling the gallery's display area and incorporating Indigenous culture. Director Anthony Kiendl emphasized that they are prioritizing budget-first design strategies to ensure fiscal responsibility amidst rising costs, which reflects a growing trend of nationalism in Canada as international architectural help comes under scrutiny.
"We're designing to budget, not budgeting to design. We're working within our means," said VAG director Anthony Kiendl, emphasizing their new financial approach.
The VAG aims to address past criticisms by opting for Canadian architects, underlining a shift towards local talent amid rising costs.
