Serpentine Announces Marina Tabassum as the Designer of the 2025 Pavilion
Briefly

Marina Tabassum Architects has been selected to design the Serpentine Pavilion 2025, titled 'A Capsule in Time.' The design, inspired by the Bengal Delta's architecture, features four wooden capsules with a translucent facade that promote community connectivity. The Pavilion, set to open on June 6, 2025, marks a significant milestone in the Serpentine's history. Tabassum's approach emphasizes social, environmental, and cultural contexts, particularly the needs of marginalized groups in Bangladesh, as seen in her previous work like the Khudi Bari housing project.
When conceiving our design, we reflected on the transient nature of the commission which appears to us as a capsule of memory and time. The relationship between time and architecture is intriguing: between permanence and impermanence, of birth, age and ruin; architecture aspires to outlive time. Architecture is a tool to live behind legacies, fulfilling the inherent human desire for continuity beyond life.
The Pavilion aims to create a versatile space for diverse events and public gatherings, fostering community interaction, with inspiration drawn from traditional South Asian Shamiyana tents.
