Daniel Rojas, partner at Wandrian Studios, won the 2023-2024 MICROHOME competition with his project Urban Residential Pods, which reimagines vacant office spaces as sustainable homes. The design addresses the housing crisis by integrating amenities within compact living units, using an off-site prefabrication system for efficient construction. This innovative approach aims to revitalize underutilized urban areas and provides insight into how architecture can tackle significant contemporary challenges, such as housing shortages and high vacancy rates in office buildings. Rojas also provides advice for future competition participants as the next edition nears.
This project was a response to two critical issues: the global housing shortage and the growing number of vacant office buildings. We aimed to create a practical, sustainable, and affordable solution that could adapt to urban environments worldwide.
Rojas' design strikes a balance between innovation, functionality, and sustainability, offering a glimpse into how architecture can address some of today's most pressing challenges.
