raum envelops renovated brittany pool and spa in black timber skin for thermal insulation
Briefly

Raum has completed the renovation and expansion of a public swimming pool and spa in Saint-Méen-Le-Grand, Brittany, to meet the needs of residents and young learners. The project introduces a sports pool and aqua-leisure area, while restructuring the existing leisure pool. The design unites compact wood and slate structures under a thermally insulated black wooden skin, enhancing energy performance and visual identity. The renovation respects the site's heritage, with a careful approach to maintaining the original superstructure, ensuring spatial connection to the landscape, and employing consistent materials inside and out to harmonize old and new elements.
This design approach extends to the exterior, where the varied outer volumes are unified through consistent materiality.
The design team builds upon the existing cluster of compact wood and slate structures, unifying them under a thermally insulated black wooden skin.
