Gamification emerged as a popular concept post-2010, with historical roots dating back to the 1980s user interface studies and even earlier workplace motivation experiments.
This systematic mapping assesses how game design elements can negatively affect users, highlighting the need for developers to understand and mitigate these potential consequences.
The research indicates that while gamification can enhance engagement, it also poses risks, such as burnout and coercion, which developers often overlook.
Developers who participated in our focus group acknowledged the usefulness of understanding the negative impacts of gamification on users, suggesting a more thoughtful application in design.
