The new Tirana campus, designed by Oppenheim Architecture, serves as the first purpose-built space for the College of Europe, emphasizing academic, social, and diplomatic engagement. It embodies the College's mission of promoting European unity and cooperation and acknowledges Albania's rich history, particularly the pivotal 1991 student protests that contributed to its democratic transition.
Central to the campus is a multifunctional agora, featuring a concrete dome evoking Albania's bunkers and concentric seating inspired by Greco-Roman theaters, meant to foster democratic interaction.
This project marks a significant expansion for the College of Europe, allowing a deeper engagement in a historically relevant city while being tailored to the unique needs of its diverse community.
Oppenheim Architecture's design intricately weaves local architectural vernacular with the College's educational mission, establishing a physical space that encourages vibrant discourse across multiple disciplines and societal spheres.
