February Book Bag: from a history of Maori art to T.J. Clark's essays on politics and art
Briefly

The recent art publications explored include "Toi Te Mana: An Indigenous History of Māori Art" and "Those Passions: On Art and Politics." The first, authored by Māori art historians, provides a comprehensive account of 800 years of Māori art, celebrating both historic and contemporary practices while emphasizing Indigenous voices. The second, a collection of essays by T.J. Clark, critiques the intricate interplay between art and politics, tracing their evolution over 25 years and questioning whether their synergy can be fully comprehended. Both works contribute significantly to contemporary art discourse.
We've created a comprehensive work that celebrates both famous and lesser-known Māori artists, as well as significant works across all visual art forms, from the arrival of Polynesians to today.
Art and politics, considered separately, are enormous realities. Whether the same can be said of their interaction is one of the questions of this book.
