Comment | How technology can help the art world take a big step towards sustainability
Briefly

The art world faces a dilemma between the cherished physical encounter with art and the environmental impact of transporting artworks globally. As climate change accelerates, with CO2 levels reaching an all-time high, there is an urgent need for the sector to reconsider its approaches. Vortic, a company specializing in virtual reality art exhibitions, commissioned a report that demonstrated digital shows can cut carbon emissions by over 90%. This suggests a viable pathway for the art sector to align with sustainability goals while preserving the experience of viewing art.
Compared with an exhibition using international air freight and travel, a digital exhibition reduces carbon emissions by more than 90%, and if the participants already possess the necessary viewing equipment, these reductions can reach up to 96%.
I wanted Vortic technology to try and replicate that feeling of standing in front of a work of art but I also wanted to confirm the extent of which every shipment saved by a Vortic view was an ecological way of going forward.
