Marina Tabassum and her firm, Marina Tabassum Architects, will design the 2023 Serpentine Pavilion in London, inspired by South Asian shamiana tents. The structure features four wooden capsules with a kinetic component that transforms the space. Sponsored by Goldman Sachs, the pavilion, titled 'A Capsule in Time,' runs from June 7 to October 27. Tabassum aims to bridge her design with the cultural significance of shamianas in Bangladesh, promoting community and relevant contemporary dialogues, while MTA focuses on contextual architecture that resists consumerism.
MTA stands against the global pressure of consumer architecture, aiming to root design in locality informed by climate and geography, emphasizing context and place.
Tabassum's pavilion connects to the fabric-made shamianas of Bangladesh, symbolizing community gatherings and expressing different agendas relevant to contemporary society.
