Creepy texts offer clues in disappearance of SoCal grandpa linked to crypto fortune
Briefly

Naiping Hou, a 74-year-old man from Rancho Cucamonga, has mysteriously disappeared, raising suspicions after bizarre texts began appearing in a family group chat. Following a family fishing trip in March, Eddie Hou noticed his father's uncharacteristic behavior beginning in April, when he declined visits to see his grandchildren and ignored phone calls. Detectives suspect that someone impersonated Naiping Hou using his cellphone, leading to fraudulent transactions exceeding $1 million from his bank account for online gold bar purchases. His son, Wen Hou, fears a kidnapping and has offered a substantial reward for information.
The younger Hou believes his father has been kidnapped and is personally offering a reward of up to $250,000 for information that leads to his father's return or identifies those responsible for his disappearance.
Detectives believe that someone used the elder Hou's cellphone to impersonate him. Extensive fraudulent transactions were also made using his bank account around the time of his disappearance.
Wen Hou said that more than $1 million was siphoned from his father's savings and used to purchase gold bars online.
We really are devastated, really sad, and we want him back if possible,' Wen Hou told The Times. 'We are pretty upset about how this was discovered so late and a bit upset about ourselves that we didn't find these clues earlier.
