At Age 24, He Ditched Becoming a Lawyer to Open a Coffee Shop. Last Year It Brought In $40 Million.
""I grew up in the food business. My father operated a number of concepts in New York City, so I grew up working with him.""
""If you were in the Midtown Financial District, the areas where the majority of New Yorkers are spending their time working, the only options for coffee really were Starbucks or Dunkin. I thought that was a huge opportunity...""
""I wanted to take what I had learned, apply it to the coffee industry, and do it in a part of the city that was extremely underserved at the time.""
""The plan was to obsess over the drinks, the ingredients and the feel of the place until it was simply better than anything around it.""
Gregorys Coffee began with one location in 2006 and has grown to 53 locations across the U.S. The company generated approximately $40 million in revenue last year, with projections of $45 million for the current year. Founder Gregory Zamfotis credits the success to a focus on quality coffee, roasted in-house. His background in the food industry and a desire to create a unique coffee experience in underserved areas of New York City fueled his entrepreneurial journey.
