Volkswagen has announced a stop sale for the ID.4 all-electric crossover due to faulty door handles. This suspension extends to both new unsold units and pre-owned inventory, as the company seeks to rectify a safety issue that poses significant operational hazards.
The automaker is recalling 98,806 units of the ID.4 to address defective door handles that lack adequate water protection, increasing the risk of serious malfunctions in vehicle locks while in motion.
Volkswagen is currently lacking a remedy for the ID.4's door handle issue but aims to have a solution by early 2025. During this time, 200 employees will be furloughed at the Chattanooga plant.
Support for furloughed employees includes supplementing unemployment benefits to ensure they receive 80% of their base compensation and maintain coverage of current benefits while the company works on a fix.
