The UK car market reached over one million new car registrations in the first half of 2024, marking the first time since the pre-pandemic era in 2019. There was a notable increase in electric vehicle market share, although plug-in hybrids and petrol hybrids outsold fully electric cars.
Mike Hawes, Chief Executive of SMMT, highlighted the shift in buyer demographics, with fleet and business buyers taking over a substantial part of the market due to incentives for low-emission vehicles. He stressed the need for policies to boost the private consumer market and accelerate the shift to zero-emission vehicles.
