Tesla rolls out self-driving tech in China after BYD offers it for free
Briefly

Tesla has begun a rollout of driving-assistance features to select vehicles in China, mirroring its Full Self-Driving (FSD) options available in the U.S. These features include lane changes, speed adjustments, and navigation through exit ramps and intersections. However, Tesla is not branding this system as FSD and it does not include all of the capabilities seen in the U.S. market. Meanwhile, BYD has emerged as a significant competitor, offering similar advanced self-driving technology at no extra cost across most of its models, positioning itself strongly in the Chinese EV market.
Tesla has started rolling out driving-assistance features to some cars in China that are similar to the Full Self-Driving system in the US, according to a software update log.
This includes guiding vehicles to exit ramps and intersections, recognizing traffic signals, making turns, and managing lane changes and speed adjustments.
BYD, Tesla's biggest rival in China, announced earlier this month that it would equip nearly all its models with advanced self-driving tech at no extra cost.
In January it sold sold nearly twice as many EVs as Tesla, with the US carmaker's sales down 11% compared with the same month in 2024.
