Electric vehicle (EV) sales in Britain have fallen as consumers grapple with high costs and a lack of charging infrastructure, leading to 'range anxiety'. Despite these hurdles, a study by the University of Birmingham and LSE reveals that battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are more reliable than petrol or diesel cars. The research analyzed nearly 300 million UK vehicles, showing BEVs have a 12% lower likelihood of failure each year, with a comparable lifespan of 18.4 years, challenging perceptions of EVs as unreliable.
'No longer just a niche option, BEVs are a viable and sustainable alternative to traditional vehicles - a significant step towards achieving a net-zero carbon future.'
'Our findings provide critical insights into the lifespan and environmental impact of electric vehicles... This analysis revealed that ... BEVs demonstrated the most rapid improvement in reliability.'
