In one county, Wicklow, one in five new cars sold since 2020 were electric, while in Roscommon it was just one in 29, new figures reveal. Former environment minister Richard Bruton says bigger incentives should be considered for rural drivers to make the switch.
Motorists in the commuter belt are slowly moving towards electric vehicles but efforts to get rural drivers out of petrol and diesel cars are stalling. Those who are shifting are opting for hybrids rather than fully electric - and a government target of having one million EVs on the road by 2030 now seems dubious.
